Sundowns seeks to extend Themba Zwane’s contract
Themba Zwane will continue to play his melodious tune for the Masandawana supporters. He is the reliable midfield maestro at Mamelodi Sundowns, and Bafana Bafana. There are whispers that a new contract is in the air. “Mshishi” Zwane’s future in Chloorkop is looking increasingly secure to the delight of both fans and management.
Zwane’s current contract as skipper of Brazil will expire at the end 2023/24 DStv Premiership season. Sources close to the club revealed that both parties were nearing an agreement for a new contract that could extend his stay by three more seasons.
“The player and the club are not worried as a new deal is on the cards,” The source confidently said Phakaaathi. “Themba is valued by Sundowns and he’s also not thinking about leaving.”
This sentiment is true, especially when you consider Zwane’s impact on the entire team. Rulani Mokwena, the coach of the team, is said to hold him in high regard and appreciate his consistent performances despite being 34 years old. This season his playing time was carefully managed to highlight both his experience and leadership.
“He’s also a leader in the team and his influence in the change room is also important,” The source also emphasized Zwane’s intangible contribution beyond the pitch.
If the new contract is approved, it could be the end of the Tembisa star’s illustrious club career. He joined the club in 2011. Since then, he’s built up an impressive trophy cabinet, winning every domestic award possible with his team. In addition, he has won the CAF Super Cup, the CAF Champions League as well as the African Football League.
Zwane is expected to play for Sundowns against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, after returning from an Afcon campaign where Bafana Bafana finished third.
Zwane’s future at Sundowns is certainly promising. His leadership and unwavering devotion make him a vital cog in Sundowns’ machinery. As the season nears its end, the announcement of the new contract would be a harmonious tune for both Zwane’s supporters and Sundowns, ensuring that the beautiful footballing partnership continues.
